Plans to raise the driving age to 18What do you think? Have your say in our latest poll.In response to the most recent statistics the government have announced they are considering raising the minimum driving age for a car to 18. The current age is 17. We are not necessarily in favour of these changes and consider that they may seriously restrict young peoples opportunities eg work/job restrictions. | |
It's a sad fact that young people are more at risk of crashing and every year 3000 are killed or seriously injured. However there are other actions and restrictions available. Below are some suggestions, a variety of which are in place in other countries, for example New drivers are only allowed to carry one passenger (research shows the risk of a crash increases 3 fold when 3 or more young passengers are carried) Speed and engine size restrictions are put in place New drivers must display "P" plates after passing their test Young drivers are restricted to driving in daylight hours only Better driver education, attitude training Automatic disqualification for new drivers if caught speeding Longer 'L' driver period Phased 'L' driver periods
