This is an Interview with Lee, aged 25 years a keen motorcyclist and proud owner of a Suzuki 1000R motorcycle.
The 21st of March last year was the day Lee's life altered forever, so did the lives of his girlfriend and his parents. It
was a nice warm sunny day. Lee decided to go for a ride on his bike
when it developed a mechanical fault, he lost control and the bike
careered onto the pavement.Lee himself crashed into a bus stop sign and
received serious injuries.
Unfortunately Lee hadn't taken the
time to put on his leathers and boots, after all he was only out for
half an hour, not really worth it was it? ...........or that's what he
thought.
This is Lee now - a disabled accident victim.
The
crash has altered Lee's life forever. He is now learning to live with
false legs. Our Roving Reporter interviewed Lee and this is what he had
to say.
RR: "How has the crash affected you?" Lee:
"It's altered my life altogether I can't do lots of things I used to
do. I can't ride a bike anymore, I can't run, it's hard to go up
stairs, I can't do any sports."
RR: "Can you work?" Lee:
"I've been lucky my employer has been really good. I still have a job
but it's not the same. I used to have a company car but I can't have
that anymore because I can only drive specially adapted cars. I don't
work full time so it's meant a cut in wages."
RR: "Did you get paid out from your insurance company?" Lee:
"No I got nothing I was only insured third party so although that
covered me legally I couldn't claim anything for me or my bike"
RR: "What is it like wearing false legs?" Lee:"I
can't wear them all the time. When I get home at night I take them off.
It's like you taking your shoes off. I don't wear them in the bath or
in bed either. When I'm at home I'm either in a wheelchair or I have to
crawl around. I don't like that. I don't like my girlfriend to see me."
RR: "I've heard it said, when people have lost their legs they can still feel them. Is that true? Lee:
"Yes sometimes it's like you scraping your shin down something except I
can't rub it and make it feel better. Other times it's like having
cramp and I can't do anything about that either"
RR: "What advise would you give to any young people reading this?" Lee:
"Don't take risks. If I'd worn my leathers and boots I think I would
still have my legs. It's the same with cars - wear the seat belts. You
don't think it will happen to you but it might. I didn't think it would
happen to me I was just a normal lad like you but it's too late now
I've got to make the best of it"
